Notes: Corporal Friedrich Fliesen was a young man at the outbreak of World War II. Caught up in a maelstrom of conflicting political wills, Fliesen is just one reminder the ultimate sacrifice that was made by millions of combatants on both sides of the war. Like so many of his generation, Fliesen would never return home.
He is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who outlived the war’s victims.
Fliesen was initially buried at the Hillside Cemetery outside of Medicine Hat, Alberta. His grieving mother spent two weeks one summer during the mid-’50s in Medicine Hat. She spent every day visiting the grave of her son, and had been forced to sell everything that she owned to pay for the trip.
Fliesen’s mother would make one more trip to Canada. In 1971 she returned as a guest of the German government for the opening ceremony of Woodland Cemetery’s German War Graves Section.
